BCN Pro migration

I have the same problem :(. I filed a support request in the app a five days ago when it happened and have not heard back.

I see I have a bcnav_16465... folder at the top of my internal storage. But I can't seem to open that from the app. It seems like the migration failed halfway through.

I also see no folder at Android/data/com/crittermap.backcountrynavigator.license/files.

I will add I made sure not to exit the app while migration was running.

I've filed a support ticket as well.

The Migration progress notification displayed off and on sporadically for about 5 hrs. It then stopped displaying altogether about 2 hrs ago. I never received a notification that the migration was successful. When I checked My Files to see if the bcnav folder was moved to Android/data/com.crittermap.backcountrynavigator.license/files, it was not there. It is still at the top level of Internal Storage. The Android/data folder is empty.

It appears that the Migration didn't work or stopped halfway through. I also made sure not to exit the app while migration was running.

The amount of internal storage taken up by the app's data ballooned to over 1.5 GB, presumably because the process didn't end cleanly. The app itself is still working fine.

    Hi Bill,

This is with the latest app update over the weekend?

    Thanks,

Was there an update over the weekend? I have not received anything.

    Dan:

Yes i downloaded the update yesterday.

So i finally got a notification of Migration Completed about 10 hrs after starting the process. I checked the bcnav folder location and it appears to have been moved to the right spot as noted in the instructions.

However, there is a new folder at the top level of internal storage called bcn_##### where ##### is some number. Is this some temporary copy of the migrated folder that i can delete? It looks mostly like the same contents and is just taking up space.

Also the BCN app is still showing 1.64 GB of storage in Android settings. Most of it in data. This is far bigger than it used to be. I removed most of the Tile files to at least temporarily free up space and it still says 1.64 GB storage. Im thinking this is a bogus number, because it didnt decrease even after i removed nearly 2 gb of Tile files. Thoughts?

Btw, i have no saved or prebuilt maps myself, so i dont know if those migrate successfully.

    Hi Bill,

We are investigating this, there have been some bad results from the migration which did not successfully finish and our lead dev is looking into what's causing this and a fix.

    Sorry about this

    thank you,

Ok. I did a restart as you suggested. And the only change was that all the tile files that i deleted to free up space came back for some reason. But at least everything seems to be showing up under the correct post migration directory. Android is still showing bcn as taking up 1.64 GB but im assuming most of that is in tile files. Ill try deleting them.again and see if that changes.

I still dont know what the bcn_##### folder is. Appears to be some byproduct of migration that didnt get cleaned up? Im not touching that one until i hear about any upcoming fix. App operation is still fine.

    Thanks.

    Hi Bill,

Please dont move anything for now.

I am waiting for our lead dev to advise on the next move as I myself, Im confused with all the new folders created.

Thank you for your patience, as always.

Same problem here...only my map failed as I was out on a new hike...tried to do the folder migration out in the woods (no luck)...missed a turn in the trail coming out...fortunately didn't come to grief. Please keep me posted. Would like to get all my tracks and downloaded maps back. Right now there is nothing.

Any updates on this? I no longer have access to my prebuilt maps, which is my main reason for using the app. Have been forced to use other apps since the failed migration. Thx!

    Hi David,

I am still waiting for advise from our lead dev on how to move forward with this as they are working on a fix.

As much as I want to, I cannot give you an ETA at the moment.

    Thank you,

    Dan

If I uninstall the program and reinstall, might that work? I realize that I may lose all my previous maps, which is disappointing, but right now, I can't even see online maps, can't download anything. This program is dead in the water and unusable for the last 3 weeks. Is your lead developer still actively working on this? Is it time for me to start looking for a maps app from another company?

I deleted the program and reinstalled. It looks like it is working fine now (though I lost all my data on the phone). I do have close to 50,000 files and 3GB of data saved to my desktop from 2018 in a folder called: com.crittermap.backcountrynavigator.license. I'm hoping I can just plug my phone into my desktop, transfer the files and retrieve pre 2018 data.

    Dan:

I see a new update to BCN Pro was just posted to Play Store. But before I update the app, what does the new update do? I did the bcnav folder migration already in the last update and it seemed to complete successfully and put everything in the right place, although it took quite a long time.  It did leave behind a copy of bcnav in the top level internal storage, but that was the only glitch.

Since the app is working for me, I'm reluctant to install this update unless it's fixing things other than migration. FYI, I do not use saved or prebuilt maps, which I know has been a problem for some. But what I don't want to do is break stuff that's already migrated. I'm holding off on updating until I get some assurance from you or the developers that it won't do that.

    Thanks,

    Bill D.

I can't use the app because it has to migrate and it is stuck at 5/7 (5/7 what I'm not sure). I can't file for help because I can't use the app. Deleted the app and reinstalled and it still is trying to migrate (stuck on 5/7). Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Drew,

Are you able to cancel the migration process - then go to settings > Storage Options > Reset Migration?

I've tried the "migration" several times and it never goes past "Migrating Folder 1/4."  The app is currently useless. Should I delete and reinstall from scratch?  I will hate to lose my saved info but since I can't get it to now anyway, it seems like this may be the only option.

    Hi Ronnie,

What android device are you using? How big is the data you are moving? Because maybe you can backup your BCNAV folder before you reinstall, then restart the migration and then transfer/copy your existing data (guide attached).

    thanks,

    dan

Thanks for commenting. I'm not exactly sure what I did yesterday but I at least got the app working. It appears to me that it is still storing files in the home directory as opposed to the new migrated location. I don't see a crittermap file in that location after downloading several new maps yesterday. Curious. But it is working. I wasn't able to use it on a trip last week, trying to get it ready for the next one.
