Searching in off-line maps

I'd like to be able to search for place names on a (vector) map I have loaded.
BCN is particularly strong in support of Vector maps (e.g. it's one of only a few to support the latest Mapsforge standard). Such maps contain a list of place-names. I would love to be able to search this list for any name on the map. As it is, I can only use Google location services, which is inadequate in two ways:
- I often use BCN in places where I have no connection;
- The kind of maps I use contain many place-names, lovingly contributed to the OSM-project by thousands of volunteers and unknown to Google. For many a nature reserve Google maps shows a blank area where my maps show cycle- and footpaths and plenty place names.

  I'd like to do something similar. Off-line search capability of a specific map/data base would be excellent.
