split a recorded track
CompletedAt least once every 4 or 5 hikes I forget to stop tracking and end up with a long truck drive track included in the track.
It would be really nice to be able to split a track in to two tracks so I can clean up tracks.

This is a better option than the other feature request that asks for stopping when a speed or starting position is reached.

It wouldn’t be easy to re-calculate the stats for two tracks that were split. Stats like Maximum Speed and Maximum Altitude would be different for each track. I thinks a better solution would be an audible alarm when you get within a certain distance of your starting point:

i have never looked at the content of the bcn track database file, but surely it must include precise time and position data pairs. From this calculating maximum speed, altitude maximum and gain and all other stats would be no more difficult than at the time the original tracking is taking place. Smoothed of course dependent on the time interval selected for recording gps readings.
An area that bcn needs to work on is general management of trip, track and waypoint data. Splitting tracks would be something I would use a lot, but even so would be my 2nd or 3rd priority. First or 2nd priority would be to facilitate sharing of trip databases, tracks or waypoints in native bcn format. Exporting to kml and gpx seems to involve a significant loss of fidelity, and in any case involves needless steps if you are sharing with another bcn user or just wanting to archive in a form that bcn can use directly.

I don't know of any file sharing application that will accept .BCN formatted files. This is why they have to be converted to a standard format first. After checking a sample GPX and KML file, I see that it includes coordinate and altitude data for each GPS reading.
So if a recorded track was shared with another BCN user, it would be possible to recalculate all of the stats based on this information if they're using the same time interval. The app currently doesn't support this, so when a recorded track is sent to another user, it wouldn't have any stats.
There would probably have to be an extra parameter for time interval included in the GPX or KML in order for this to work. Once this is done, it would be a simple matter to add a feature for splitting tracks, and recalculating their stats.

Other than putting bcn data on Google Earth (for which kml is the format) my main sharing requirement is with other bcn users. Both kml and gpx formats lose fidelity, ie they are not a faithful reproduction of the data encapsulated in the bcn databases, for example waypoint icon formats are lost. So we have a complicated process of manually creating 'sub'-databases in preparation for sharing, then manually exchanging the files, and then importing in to our 'working' trip databases. All very tedious, and generally messed up by non-geeks.

I discovered that if I export a trip database in GPX or KML format to another BCN user via Dropbox or email, the waypoint icon format is correctly reproduced, along with name description, and coordinates. However, any added notes or attached photos are lost. For a track, the only data that shows up correctly is name, description, and color.
When I open the KML file on Google Earth, the same track data will appear. For waypoints, only the name, description, and coordinates will be shown correctly. Some of the more commonly used icons are reproduced on Google Earth also, such as "Campground" or "Bicycle".
