[Support] NMEA in/out
Originally from ticket #3482.
Hi,
I have been using since many time a garmin etrex legend handheld GPS unit
while hiking. Your backcountry navigator might be the app i was looking for
to leave some room inside my backpack !
Beside hiking i am an Amateur Radio Operator and I am using the NMEA in/out
interface of the Garmin to interface with my radio. This radio (Yaesu VX8GR)
is fitted with the APRS system, which allows ham radio operators to geolocate
each others. Basically the radio uses NMEA to communicate with the Garmin.
When a position beacon is received by the radio it is turned to GPWPL nmea
sentence and sent to the Garmin ....
Does your app support input/output of NMEA data ? That would be the ultimate
killer !
Regards and Merry Christmas,
Geoffrey

I would like to request a new feature, the ability to open a serial connection via Bluetooth and accept APRS packet data from a mobile radio, either by using the raw packet data from the radio, or using the waypoint data that can be output by a number of different radios.

Since Geoffrey posted his request, there is now an app called "aprsdroid". It will bluetooth to a kiss tnc. Built by mobilinkd. The kiss tnc controls, sends and receives location/gps data and short text messages through an amateur radio. This information is displayed in aprsdroid as a list of other amateur radio operators and is also displayed on a google map when available. It would be a wonderful thing to be able to display the received location information on the BCN map. Sort of a merge of aprsdroid and BCN, if you wil.
THANKS from a long time BCN user and new ham.

Hi, the excerpt from ticket 18131 is from a request I made, While closely related, the two functions are independent...
My radio is a Yeasu ftm-400 which has a built in GPS for the purpose of APRS. I can set the radio to one of 3 options for data output.
1) NMEA - This causes the radio to send the NMEA GPS sentences to the comm port at 1hz
2) Packet - This will output only the incoming APRS data packets, with the intent being for display on a computer or compatible GPS device(which there is only one that I found)
3) Waypoint - This will output the APRS data packets, using I think a Magellan format.
It is up to the receiving program to decode and maintain a list of received points, and something like APRSDroid will present you with a list of stations and the data sent, and will plot all of the received data on a google map, This obviously is great if you have cell service....It also of course shows each stations track log on the map, with selectable timeframe of 1hr, 2hrs, on up.
If BCN could handle the data stream by itself from a Bluetooth com port, that would be awesome! I'm not sure of the difficulties involved, but I could certainly see a use for being able to output the NMEA data from the gps to a separate Bluetooth device, or possibly even the same one.... Bluetooth modems are cheap, around $30 each for ttl board, and I think I have probably 5 of them in various parts boxes right now...
Thanks from another long time user and an even newer ham than Tom

I'd like to point out that several people that commented on this thread http://support.crittermap.com/entries/23353284-Track-friends-in-the-outdoors- specifically mention APRS, as well as APRSDroid.... All interested in what I mentioned in my currently unapproved comment..
