Waypoint Proximity Alerts
PlannedThanks for all of your work on BCN. It's a really great app but I have an idea for improvement:
In the daytime I have trouble seeing my screen and often miss a trail I need to turn on while careening through the Nevada desert on my motorcycle. I think a great solution would be to have proximity alerts for waypoints. This way as I approach a waypoint (in my case a predetermined turnoff),
The phone could vibrate or alarm sound til canceled or auto cancel. This way I wouldnt need to even look at the map nearly as much! If you end up doing something like this please include different proximity options like 0', 10', 20', 40', 60', etc.
Thanks for hearing my idea!

turn by turn alerts please

Yes, good feature for dirt biking and ATVing--I would use it. 0 -
Waypoint alerts, and multi-point route navigation would make this a no-brainer purchase for me.
I can get maps with tracks and waypoints easily enough with many different apps, including google maps and google earth.
What's missing in EVERY piece of GPS software I've looked at for Android is something that will do proximity alerts, and multi-point route alerts.
I'm looking for something to help me with back-country running where I can let my GPS guide me without needing to look at it. I often run on trails that I"m not familiar with and I currently have to stop at every trail intersection, look at the map, and see if that's wehre I turn. If I could just get alerted at waypoints that I set, and have an alert tone followed by some simple (preferably per-point customizable) message to tell me which way to turn, etc. that would be incredible. I think I'd prefer text-based customized messages that would be read out via Text-to-Speech.

Proximity alerts with user defined custom sounds for each individual waypoint.
Then I can have"Turn Right Here" or one beep for "straight ahead", two for" right turn", etc .
With AT&T Natural Voices® Text-to-Speech I can create any instructions I desire.

Just started using this app having previously used viewranger and buying map tiles. The proximity alarm is the one thing I really miss. 0 -
Having previously used view ranger for geocaching I really miss the waypoint alerts. They are invaluable. 0 -
This would be a great feature to a great product.

This is a very needed feature! I currently try to guess my pace and when I should be there, then set an alarm on my watch. Very inconvenient. Please let me know when I'm getting close to my destination.
Knowing that GPS, particularly smartphone GPS, can be inaccurate, I'd like multiple alerts, such as at 1000 ft, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, etc.

Yes, this is very important.
Often I'll be skiing toward a waypoint, and I don't want to have to keep holding the device and looking down on it.
My ancient Garmin 60 series GPS beeps at me once I'm close to a waypoint toward which I'm navigating, and this seems like an easy function to add.

Another example, paddling down a river, for hours on end. "How long until we get there?" I would like the option to have it announce every ten minutes how many miles it is to the destination. "Your destination is 7.2 miles away." "Your destination is 6.8 miles away." ...

High on my list! Would use this when hiking, biking and Geocaching. One of the reasons I still use my Garmin. 0 -
I like the idea ofwarnings when nearing waypoints but with some fone gps it can be off 20 to 40 feet So it may be useless depending on what fone is being used. I can only thing of one situation where I would use this if you add it. 0 -
I support this idea, it would be a very helpful feature.

Also, the first commentator mentions that the screen is very hard to see during the daytime. You can support another feature that would make a white screen background option by going to this thread and "liking" it:

I agree that this would be a great feature to add. I vote for a 100ft proximity alarm, but options would be great too. 0 -
Those who are willing to try our evolving attempt:
Go to settings and find GOTO Options. Turn on Show Goto Option.
See what happens the next time you start a GOTO.

Under my GOTO options, it has "Show this choice" but what choices are it referring to ? There's nothing below.
Please see attached screenshot.
Thanks,

But there are choices *above* it.
You can choose NOW or when within a specified distance.

I have been request to post this feature request from Dan at CritterMap.
I am requesting a feature that is not currently available in Backcountry Navigator. I request the inclusion of a geofencing / proximity alert or warning zone that is constructed from a user defined radius surrounding a waypoint. This geofencing zone would either be locked to the waypoint details or used as part of the set up procedure options when you create a GOTO a waypoint. This is not a novel idea, several android apps have this as their sole purpose. The common problem they have is that they seem to rely on Google's location service at the expense of a GPS only protocol and are generally creepy and invasive with their permissions.
Dan's direction to see if using the option in the GOTO waypoint option of "when I am within this distance" does not seem to be in the direction I was hoping for. If I use this option [and please correct me if I am wrong] it sets up an action to GOTO that waypoint when my position is within XXX distance of my location. I am looking more for a solution that directly sets up a geofence around a waypoint that triggers an alert [sound, vibration, or even sending an SMS] if I enter the user defined radius distance of the geofence area surrounding a given waypoint I am navigating to.
If this functionality is in fact missing, I would encourage your development team to consider adding a plastic and direct geofencing / location alert option similar to those used in the Alarm-Me android app. I would pay for that option if it were an optional expense addon to your app.
Perhaps it would look like this in the waypoint details before you select GOTO, select a waypoint > add an action > add a geofence > select a user defined radius distance > select an alert type > sound, vibrate, SMS > GOTO
Think of it, you could stash your device in your pack while your are following an obvious path / trail in the field and get automatic notification(s) as needed for actions or warnings as you proceed to your "goto point" that has a geofence alert. You could set up automatic "I'm OK" check point message triggers for SMS, or fill your water bottle here alert on the device, or you are approaching private land / don't stray from the trail warnings. I have encountered these issues personally and solved them with a more complicated multiple waypoint route construction with warning named waypoints, but it's a pain.
It would be great if the radius dimension could be as small as GPS practical and up to 4 miles. That way I can set an alert so I don't over sleep my train stop when I commute home if I dose off.
Thanks again, and please understand that these are suggestions to make a great app even better and they are not criticisms

/\ 100% This /\
Also have an option where, once withing x-meters of a waypoint, go to the next waypoint in the waypoint list!!!
Within 100m, audio alert “100m from waypoint” or ding or whatever. Within 25m of waypoint, automatically navigate to next waypoint.
