I have the same problem/concern.  This feature, and any advice on prolonging battery life would be much appreciated.

Nowdays, the best option might be to have "Keep GPS On" set to false. Then the GPS will only come on when the screen is on and can usually find a warm fix fairly quickly.

A feature that allows for intermittent GPS fixes at specific intervals would really make BCN a full solution for back country navigation while hiking. The solution offered to manually open the app and wait isn't really viable/optimal for those of us that want to keep moving and only take out the device when needed to navigate. Having to wait with the screen on and with BCN in the foreground until a fix is made interrupts the main activity, hiking and also drains the battery more because the screen is on. GPS Logger for Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mendhak.gpslogger&hl=en has this feature (Specify time intervals or Specify distance intervals) but doesn't have a map viewer or any of the awesome navigation features of BCN.
