User Defined Auto Waypoint Names
I love the crittermap android app... It
has at least partially replaced my longtime hiking partner Garmin
GPSmap76CSX
One thing I'd repeatedly asked Garmin to consider is
user defined auto waypoint names.
I for one don't care too
much what the date and time of the waypoint is I know when I was there
and if I really need to know the track has the data, I generally use the
mileage... I like to add a prefix which I now have to add
later.
for example I'm hiking the "Stone Cyn Trail"
the prefix would be "SCT" if the app grabbed the mileage from
the stat page the waypoint name would be SCT0.00
Another
feature I'd suggested would be a mileage based alarm... Someone says
"hike up here 1 mile and look for the rock that looks like a
bear" the mileage based alarm would allow you to set it so when the
stat page indicates 0.90 miles it alerts you to start looking for the
feature.
Anyway keep it up... This is gonna replace the
handheld GPS mostly more so if they make a waterproof, floating unit
;-)
Cheers
Matt
** ALSO for NAMING TRACKS
----
From Ticket: 16578
The default name for tracks is the date and time. Formatted as mmddtttt.
In Europe format should be ddmmtttt.
Is it possible to have an option to allow this change.
-
Please add the feature for naming of tracks as well (not just waypoints). Thanks.

I sure wish you could add YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM to the Waypoint Name format. If you've got several tracks that span a couple of years with waypoints, it's nearly impossible to tell which year the waypoints were created. Hopefully this change would not be too difficult. Why not include multiple formats as peoples needs are different. We need more choices.

Adding an option for year to be included in the time/date format for tracks and waypoints shouldn’t be too hard, but there may be some difficulty in adding a mileage indicator to the waypoint name. The stat page shows distance traveled on a track, so the app would have to calculate which waypoints are in the vicinity of the track position. And there would be errors if there is more than one track near a certain waypoint.

I didn't say anything about a mileage indicator; just the option to include the year.

I was referring back to Matt's comment at the top of the page.

Dear devs,
Before I go on hikes, I download the relevant tiles into bcnav, and pre-mark forks in the trail so the set of markers outlines my planned path for me.
The default waypoint names in bcnav are either date+time or time based, if I remember correctly.
Since I mark things while still in the planning phase, the times at which I make these marks are meaningless.
I was wondering if you would consider adding a default that will simply mark waypoints with sequential numbers 1,2,3,4 etc, or letters a,b,c,d...z,aa,ab,ac etc.
It'll be so much nicer than marking two points miles away from each other "11:19" and "11:20".
Admittedly a nice to have (as I can always edit labels manually), but thought I'd put it out there for consideration.
Thanks & happy thanksgiving!2 -
Would you be willing to create an update that simplifies the naming of waypoints?
Right now it is a 4 step process if you do not want to use date and time as a waypoint name.
We need a simpler, faster waypoint marking system for the work that we do.
We are looking for a consecutive number naming, where we click on the waypoint button, the waypoint is a generic number and we have the option of save or cancel. Then the next waypoint would automatically be named the next number in sequence.
We really like this app except for the waypoint issue. If this update could be done, our agency would be using this app throughout the rest of the state.1 -
Two options for sequential waypoint naming have now been added to the Settings -> Waypoint Options menu. Waypoints can be named sequentially by number starting from 1, or sequentially by letter starting from A.
As you click the Waypoint Mark Button (or use the long-press technique) on a point on the map, it will automatically create a waypoint with the next number or letter in the sequence.

Is the option to use the MM-DD HH:MM option still available? If so, I wish you would add YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM to it.

I tried the long-press technique. It did create a waypoint, however it used the same name as the last waypoint. It did not use the next letter or number in sequence.

So I played with this some more, and figured out how it works. The long-press does name the waypoints sequentially as well.
I'd like to thank the developers for working on these things. It is going to really help out with the work that I do.
