I just saw this after submitting a request.  I should have checked prior.  This is great idea not only for camping, but for hunters/recreational shooters.

Is the picture above something like you would expect the map to look like?

Of course, it would have multiple resolutions for zooming. It has the following layers

    • State boundaries
    • BLM National Conservation Areas
    • BLM National Monuments
    • BLM Wilderness Areas
    • BLM Lands
    • BLM Lands Dissolved
    • BLM Bankhead J

There are all kinds of data including things like mining claims, coal, oil, gas, solar, wind energy.

I'm assuming that people are interested in the boundaries, pure and simple.

Can you look at this notice and tell me if it means that Geocommunicator has the data you need - or not?

    http://www.geocommunicator.gov/GeoComm/about.htm

I'm trying to figure this out, but it appears that there was data that is no longer included in BLM, so there is a chance for big dissapointment if I made a map based on it.

I'll just respond here, so that you don't have to bounce back and forth between the two topics.  After browsing the geocommunicator maps, based on other maps of BLM I have seen before (at least in my southern california region) , they look to be accurate.  However, the only aspect of the maps I know/recognize is the layer just tilted BLM.

I just realized I may have not been clear in the answer to your question.  As for the data, It is what I would like to have shown, which is shaded areas of BLM land (public).

Yes Nathan, I would just like the boundaries and shaded colors for BLM and USFS.

    Hi Nathan

I just bought your app and used it on a hunting trip in Wyoming.  It worked perfectly, it's a very useful app.  My friend had bought a BLM map along that had the blue/yellow landowner designations for the checkerboard area we were in.  I'm not sure whether this is what you were referring to in this question, but I'd really like to have the ability to use BLM maps through your app.  Here's an example of what I'm referring to, only this product is for the Garmin devices.

This is a sneak preview of what it looks like on a portion of Idaho. The data comes from the District BLM Offices. It has been a lot of work.

There is a plan to roll these out next week for many different states. In many cases two or more states are together.

I hope more than three people are interested. If less than a thousand people buy them, we will lose money and probably won't do this next year.

That's a great feature, I'd pay for that add on and I'd let all the other folks I talk to know about it as well.

    This looks great!

Maybe you should take a serious poll, Nathan, but I would definitely pay for this feature on BCNav. I would end up purchasing multiple areas, as I travel so much. I too would try and help you sell the software by publicizing it among my friends and travelling companions.  Carol Wiesner-Droid X

Idaho is available for purchase now, and 12 or so other western states will roll out next week. If everyone spreads the word we could get the word to people in time for hunting season.

How do you turn on/off the layer. It lags the loading of maps.

    All the overlays:

You have to press on it to see the Checklist.

Boundary maps for 12 states are now available.

That's what I've been doing with my CA blm overlays. However once I hit the back button to go back to the map they are still there. When I go back to the overlays its still there and still checked.

I'm not sure what the problem is, then. It works on several devices here. You can go deep into purchasing addons, find the California product detail, and uncheck show on map, but that does the same thing?

What is your device and has it had any trouble saving settings in the past?

The way you just desscribed the long way worked. However the "shortcut" way doesn't turn it back on eithere. Seems to be a problem with that. I'm using a HTC G2. And no, never any problems in the past.

That at least narrows it down.

    I've released a possible fix in 4.2.3.

    That did it. Thanks!

Just purchased the BLM overlay for Montana. Kind of disappointed to see that the boundaries were already shown on the MyTopo.com maps I was using - the new overlay just makes them thicker more ovbious lines with the type of land . But MAN did this overlay slow down the redrawing of the screen on my Droid 2. When scrolling around a zoomed in area using the MyTopo background, the BLM Overlay, and a prerecorded track the (cached) topo moves smoothly but then the overlays disappear and it takes around 15 seconds for the BLM Overlay and my track to redraw.
I can also confirm the behavior Anthony was seeing. After showing all three of my layers, I can go in and uncheck the BLM layer, go back to the map and the BLM Overlay is still being displayed. If I then exit BCN and come back in the BLM layer is gone but it does not refresh the map to remove it after unselecting it.

I have noticed the sluggish nature also. It's best to clear the layer when browsing around the map. The last update fixed the issue with clearing the layers for me. I still notice a sluggish response of the clearing of the layer once it is unchecked though. Try just moving the map or wait a few seconds for it to clear. I'm sure with time it will get better as updates are released.

Anthony said that this fixed as of 4.2.3. Is it not fixed for you in this version?

MyTopo maps do not show boundaries for BLM, State, MIlitary, or Fish and wildlife, but their USFS boundaries may be as good as what the BLM has - depending on where you are. With all the people complaining about how out of date MyTopo maps are, I'm glad you found something good in them.

Droid 1 has only a few seconds delay - I'm not sure of the difference.

If dissatisfied, I will refund you immediately.

Rendering will improve over time. There is a *lot* of data to sort through, so some lags are to be expected. We hope to make some more breakthroughs.

Refund? Hellz no - Backcountrynavigator has become one of my "cold dead hands" apps.

4.2.3 doesn't seem to fix the overlay not being removed without closing/reopening the app...but then again, I've only been using the BLM overlay for about an hour total so I don't know what it was like in previous versions.

The area of MT where I'm seeing the BLM stuff just overlaying lines that were already on the MyTopo stuff is around 46.280885,-112.335892 if you want to take a look for yourself.

Overall, the slowness is just an annoyance but the application is awesome and the technical support and post-sales response is even better. Thank you so much Nathan!

If you could add the Montana Cadastral (gis.mt.gov) data as a preloadable layer I think you may approach killer app status for a number of industries in theis part of the country. (I'm interested in hunting, but that layer would open your market to real estate, utility, law enforcement, and TONS of other business and you'd be kicking the butt of dedicated GPS devices like the Garmins.)

would it be possible to create a sub menu within the layer control that would allow you to select what specific boundaries you wish to display. As a way to improve load times for those only interested in specific boundaries?

Some of the boundaries, such as, local, and private are unnecessary for those hiking, hunting and camping if you already have the other boundaries in the layer.
