waypoint tools
Planned- create new waypoint at a bearing and distance from another waypoint (or current location)
- a line tool that allows you to draw a line between two points and get the range and heading between the points (Requested by: David Mahnken)
- distance and bearing between 2 waypoints
- include waypoints along a track (by a dot) on the graphing feature for tracks. This would allow the user to know
how many miles on the track the waypoint is located from either start point. (Requested by: Troyelawson) - waypoints set automatically every "x" minutes or "y" miles. This is to allow cross-referencing with photos taken on a NON GPS equipped camera. (Requested by: Roger Jewell)

a feature that would allow measuring distance by scrolling the screen 0 -

I agree! BCN needs better measurement tool. I'm thinking..long press screen starts measurements line then drag line between point A to point B...kinda like Google earth.... 0 -
Gps data and other data at a selected track point. Not creating a waypoint just viewing data along the track. Got speeding ticket and want to know how fast at known location. Larrydifran gmail 0 -
First off, I really like this app, and Nathan must never sleep because his support is simply amazing.
I'm taking a GPS class and the instructor requires us all to have a Garmin, but I convinced him to let me try out my Android tablet instead. Last class we had to find the distance and bearing (magnetic and true) between two waypoints. Entering the waypoints was a little roundabout, since you have to add one in a random spot, and then edit its coordinates to get the specific location you want. No big deal there though.
The next bit was trickier. It seems there's no way to get stats (bearing, distance, alt diff, etc.) between two waypoints. I looked around online, and it doesn't seem like ANY apps do this (apart from perhaps a maritime navigation tool), so BCN would have a unique feature if this were implemented. I can't imagine it being all that difficult, to be honest. I guess the altitudes of the waypoints would have to be close to correct (or if they're set to the default of zero, just assume the nominal radius of the earth).
Also, I noticed that in order to calculate a bearing from current location to a waypoint, you have to have an active lock. This caused some confusion for me because I went outside to get lock on current location, then tried to go back into the classroom to calculate the bearing to different waypoints. If I changed the destination waypoint, the bearing wouldn't update until I went back outside. As soon as I stepped out the door, the bearing would update. That seems to be unnecessary, can't BCN just use your last known location to calculate the new bearing?
Sorry for the long post. I really enjoy the app, and it's amazing to me to look back at the forum and all the improvements you've made just in the last few months. It gives me hope that these waypoint tools might not be far behind. :)

I agree. This is a great program but that would be a great addition.

Another vote for distance measurement. I use BCNav for backcountry skiing, and I would like to be able to calculate slope angles in avalanche terrain. If there was a way to get waypoint elevation by interpolating on the contours that would be even better, but I suspect that's not really an option so I can just estimate that part myself.

There's an app which I believe uses some kind of Google elevation API to get the elevation for a given coordinate. Of course you'd need a data connection, but maybe something like that would be an option?

First off, let me just say this is an awesome app. Being able to measure the distance to a waypoint/PoI from current fix would be great and is probably the feature I'm missing the most. To be able to measure the distance between two waypoints/PoI without involving your current fix would be icing on the cake. I have an older (~7year) Magellan eXplorist 500 with the topo package and as soon as you start moving the thumbstick the cursor moves away from your current fix and the display starts reading the elevation, bearing and distance of the map under the cursor and the screen stays that way regardless if you're moving (map only moves with cursor). A simple press of the X button and the map centers back on your current known fix and continues tracking with your movement. Obviously we don't have a thumbstick on our phones so the operation would be slightly different, but there's an example. I'm sure when you find the time to tackle that project, it'll be awesome however you choose to do it. Thanks again!

My apologies, I somehow missed the measurement feature you've already added. I hadn't checked for a while and looking at this website it seems that it's still on the backlog. Anyway, very cool that it's there. Is there anyway to change the measurement display units? I see it's in feet until a certain point then it's decimals of a mile. For me it would be more useful to have yards/meters displayed out to 1 mile. Thanks!

I'm breaking this feature as a separate topic:

I would be happy just to be able to draw a bearing line from a known point. That seems pretty simple. It should work be either letting you dial in a bearing or you could extend a line from the waypoint and then a field on the app will tell you what bearing it is as you swing it around.

I would like to see distance measurement displayed on a track, like "mile markers".
