PLEASE NOTE:
The guidance in the newer downloadable manual supersedes any instructions on these pages.

GETTING STARTED
Please note of the new overflow menu located on the upper right portion of the screen for devices with screen sizes that does not fit all the menus. On some devices (not many) you might need to use the system menu key to reach this menu.
Opening BackCountryNavigator for the first time
The first screen you will see when you open the app will be a Map Selection Screen.
This screen gives you the option to [A] Subscribe to BCN's newsletter for updates and more! [B] A link to our online manual and [C] A link to BCN's HelpDesk and Forum and [D] - Email Support
*Ticking the[E] "I've learned this" box will keep this inline support menu from showing up during start-ups.
The first time you run BackCountry Navigator, you will probably want to accomplish at least two things.
- Choose a Map Source for viewing
- Center the Map on a specific place.
Choosing a Map Source
1. Click the "Layers" Menu
Then, The "Layers" options pop-up will Open; The 4 most recent map source you used would be displayed beside the word "Map Source" - it is a dropdown menu
* Internet Loading should be enabled if you want to "Stream" map sources; Turn it off if you want to use previously downloaded Map tiles.
Clicking "More Map Sources" will open up the map selections below. Clicking each tab will open up the various maps available per region.
Centering on a Place / Coordinates
When doing a search, the application will give you several options; specially when an area of interest has similar names/locations associated with it.
which will give you several options on how you would like to get on that place of interest.
(outdated screenshot - but should show the same options)
you can either choose to [A] Center on Coordinates [B] Create a Waypoint [C] GOTO Coordinates.
Centering on a coordinate / place of interest is as easy as clicking the Center on Coordinates (with matching coordinates based on format you currently use) option.
Please note this version in the video is a very outdated version.

Trying... can't seem to find property lime part of the app
I would like to print out the user guide, but you use so much black in in the guide that I would use a whole cartridge just to print it out. Can you put out a printer friendly version?
Grant Wagner
Hi Grant,
Are you able to adjust your printer settings?
I think this is the best way for now.
Thanks,
Dan
"Can you put out a printer friendly version?" I second the motion above by Grant Wagner .
THIS IS NOT AN EASY APP TO WADE THROUGH AS THE LEARNING CURVE IS STEEP. A PRINT FRIENDLY VERSION WOULD BE MUCH APPREACIATED.
JERRY
Hi Jerry,
As of the moment, we have individual manuals that you can print straight from your browser.
If you are using Google Chrome, just hit CTRL + P > Save as PDF > Print - that should work ideally the same as a formatted PDF copy.
Thanks,
Dan
Hello. I purchased BCN onto my Note3, and I 'm wondering if it can be installed on my PC?
Hi Bryan,
We do not have an updated desktop version but you can try using this software: http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping/
Thanks,
Dan
Could you please make a complete manual in PDF that we could down load to keep as a reference? I love backcountry navigator and would like to be able to use it to its full capabilities. Please make a manual in PDF?
I agree, would like a PDF file to print that I could sit with and get to really know how to use app. I have used it but feel I am stumbling around to find what I should be doing.
Here we are four months later after asking you people to please set up your BCN instructions so that the user can print a study copy without using a whole canister of black ink,.....and still no joy!!!
A few people have also made the same request and still no joy,.....WHY ???
Hi Jerry,
We understand your concern.
However, placing the manuals online is the most efficient way for us since the app is updated constantly, it's a more effective method of delivering/updating new content without re-doing everything from scratch if we compiled them all into one pdf.
A suggestion I think that you could use is to actually print this manual page straight off your browser as PDF - should work fine and you can control the number of pages, so it won't be using a boatload of black ink.
Also, another one is to copy the entire page onto a say, MS Word document - and remove the pictures there - that should save up some ink as well.
Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience,
Dan
HI, I was using the free version of the app and enjoy it so today I bought the pro version. Unfortunately it is stuck. The installation was weirdly long until google play finally crashed, then I got it installed and it opened to a black screen. Finally I uninstalled and reinstalled and it is again stuck in the middle of installation. And my phone is heating up pretty quickly.
I am using a brand New Samsung Note 3 and the free version runs well on it except for a couple of glitches that I think are app related.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Hi,
What Android OS Version do you have?
Can you try updating your Google Play Store / Play Store services?
We DO NOT have jurisdictions over the download process from Google Play, so it would be wise to contact them directly here: https://support.google.com/googleplay/?hl=en&rd=1#contact=1
Thanks!
Dan
Hi Dan,
I figured the problem out. I think the free version that was on the phone was interfering with the installation of the pro version. I finally deleted them both and reinstalled and it seems to be working.
Thanks
bb
Hi Dan,
Is there a step-by-step on actually planning a trip from start to finish ... ? maybe best practices so to speak ... ?
There are several areas which I frequent, and want to be able to load them all on my phone so I always have them (I have plenty of space so this isn't a concern) and be able to reload them as needed with saved way points and all. More importantly being able to back them all up and restore them if needed. I took my first trip using BCN last year and found some water holes (not marked on any maps) and marked them on my phone so I could always get back to them. Not sure what I did but I some how lost everything, being able to backup/restore would be great ... I'm also finding that I might have to reset my phone in order to get the 5.0 update since I rooted my phone, if I end up having to, it would be great to just re-install BCN and then restore the back up.
Thanks,
Anthony
Hi Anthony,
We have more support manuals here: http://support.crittermap.com/categories/20074446-Guides-and-Tips
Backup/Restore Syncing is still not a feature available to the app, however you can backup the entire BCNAV folder and your data should remain intact when you re-install the app (*sometimes you need to load a trip file for it to re-sync)
please see this: http://support.crittermap.com/entries/52428360-BackCountryNavigator-Directory-Hierarchy
Thank you,

Wondering if one can change the default waypoint icon? I know one can for individual waypoints
Hi Will,
as of the moment no.
Thanks,
dan
I've figured out how to edit a waypoint position out in the field, but it is difficult to see the cursor. This is on a Galaxy s5. Even with the screen brightness at max, the faint green line is hard to make out. Is there a user option for changing its color?
Thanks
Art
Hi Art,
As of the moment, not yet - this has been requested in the past here: http://support.crittermap.com/entries/20831721-Changing-location-cursor
Please like this thread as our devs take into consideration the number of people requesting a certain feature before implementing them.
Thank you,
Dan
You can print to pdf any web page. That is what I'll be doing. Using the demo for now. Very likely to be buying so far.
Please state how to start navigating a route. And how to start navigating a track? There seems to be no option for that in list of tracks. Or is this app only about bird-eye view of the track/route?
@kaido
Please refer to our updated manual HERE (please click)
Thanks!
Dan
Thanks, read that, but there is no understandable answer. First, you should you have clear heading or chapter in the documentation 'how to navigate a track'. There is chapter how to use GOTO function, but one really has to read the chapter to understand if this is about navigating or something else. More importantly, the GOTO can be used to navigate to waypoint, but nothing is said about navigating a whole track. Can you add a chapter 'how to navigate a track' in plain words? Sidenote: the documentation is really hard to follow. A lot of the description seems to be about how one can record his track, but little to nothing about how one can use the track.
Hi Kaido,
Are you talking about Section 5 of the manual?
thanks,
dan
